Graduate jobs in IT and finance 'leaving the recession behind'

Published: Thursday, 20 January 2011   Category: Science, Engineering and IT

The graduate jobs market is leaving the recession in its wake, especially in financial services and IT positions, according to a body that supports graduate roles.

This is good news for anyone looking for graduate vacancies in these sectors.

Dan Hawes, co-founder of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, said "we are leaving the recession behind us and we are slowly noticing growth in different areas".

"There are certain sectors leading the way, like financial services, investment banking and the like.

"IT, retail and FMCG [fast-moving consumer goods] are all areas we're very busy with at the moment," he added.

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation's latest JobsOutlook survey found that employers are cautiously positive about prospects for the coming 12 months, with 21 per cent saying they will be adding to their headcounts this year.

However, Mr Hawes sounded a note of caution about the graduate market, predicting that the climbing numbers of students entering the market would make the fight for positions "quite competitive".
