People looking for graduate engineer jobs should consider entering the high-tech manufacturing, which research has revealed is the most confident sector of the economy.

The research, which was commissioned by energy company General Electric, also revealed that many high-tech companies had a strong year in 2010, despite the downturn, reports the Independent.

According to the report, 71 per cent of businesses in the sector are confident that their 2011 performance will be as good as or better than last year's numbers.

A quarter of high-tech manufacturers posted growth of over ten per cent last year.

Mark Elborne, the president and chief executive of General Electric in the UK, told the news provider that the high-tech sector could drive the economy.

"[Our research] shows a vibrant and positive sector that can help revitalise the UK economy over the next few years," he said.

"Many of those surveyed had a positive 2010 and feel confident about 2011, particularly when discussing the potential in export markets."

General Electric is a multinational company with its headquarters in the United States.
