Graduate vacancies look likely to be filled at Google after its advertisement received 75,000 applications in the first week the vacancies were open.

The internet company announced the jobs - in many departments including advertising sales and customer support, product management and software engineering - earlier this year.

Google has a successful graduate scheme which applies to most departments in its London office, which is the second largest engineering hub in Europe (behind Zurich).

Last year was the second-biggest year of growth in staff levels in Google's history, with the company hiring 4,500 new people in roles, including on its graduate scheme.

The company is expected to take on 6,000 new staff members around the world this year.

Google and Facebook are reported to be interested in buying Twitter. According to the Wall Street Journal, executives from the online firms have been in talks with the microblogging website for months.
