FirstGroup begins hunt for engineering and finance graduates

Published: Tuesday, 13 December 2016   Category: All Graduate Jobs News

FirstGroup, a transport operator, has started its search for the next generation of engineering and finance graduates to join its training programmes, beginning in 2017.

The company, who control intercity train operator TransPennine Express (TPE), has begun taking applications for its finance, engineering and general management programmes.

Applications who prove to be successful receive hands-on experience, mentoring and technical training, as part of a thorough and action-packed leadership development programme.

The rail industry in the North of the country is currently seeing a massive upturn in growth, and TPE is looking to attract a more diverse and younger workforce, as it seeks to replicate the communities in which it serves.

As it stands, there are seven graduates already working for TPE in a number of areas including customer service and commercial.

One of the major benefits of hiring graduates for TPE is that they benefit from an influx of fresh ideas and new perspectives, which are vital for a fast-moving sector.

Gain valuable experience within a growing industry

Samantha Humphries, FirstGroup’s Graduate Programme Manager, said: “The scheme is ideal for graduates who want to fast-track themselves towards senior management positions.”

Graduates who secure positions will get the opportunity to work in a number of locations, meet thousands of new people and gain valuable experience within a growing industry.

Running for two years, the graduate schemes give those successful the opportunity to take control of their experience and complete placements at other companies, such as Network Rail and the London Underground.

Sutopa Paul, a graduate engineer with TPE, said: “The initial months involved getting my hands dirty and working with technicians to understand how the systems are managed. I even had the chance to drive a vehicle for two weeks. I’m currently managing a team of engineers. I would never have imagined that I’d be in such a responsible role so early in my career.”
