Fashion graduate adds festive sparkle to design collection

A budding fashion designer is enjoying the festive season after successfully launching her own business.

Sourcing sequins from Delhi has allowed her to create an embellishment-heavy label. Visually pleasing and technically designed, her collection is not your everyday sequin fare - but then Mané Virdee doesn't want to be your everyday designer.

The London College of Fashion and University of the Creative Arts graduate began in print but has quickly found a niche in the market.

“I find it quite interesting to see people I don't really think of as embellishment fans suddenly become converts after getting up close to the product and trying it on,” Mane explained.

Among the many fans of her sequined products is British Fashion Awards Fashion Innovator FKA Twigs.

The budding designer, born-and-bred in London, added she tries to meet as many different tastes as possible.

“When I design I think of a group of friends with different personalities and tastes, but who still have something in common,” she said. “Some glam it up, no holds barred, and others mix it in with their casual day to day stuff, like an embellished skirt and sweatshirt.”

Mane takes a great deal of her inspiration from Delhi. With so many fabrics, colours and sequins to choose from, this is one destination that has opened up a world of possibilities for the fashion graduate.

Originally sent to Delhi by the high street favourite All Saints, where she once worked as Head of Embellishment, it was in India where Mane began dreaming of launching her own label.

She revealed that being in Delhi allows her to be close to both her suppliers and the sequin markets, providing a constant source of inspiration. The upcoming designer now spends 50% of her time in India and the other half in London, devoting all the time necessary to growing her business.
