Experienced candidates 'can always secure grad jobs'
Wednesday, 03 December 2008
Graduates who have the right skills and experience will always be sought after in the recruitment market, regardless of the state of the economy, it has been suggested.
According to Steven Kirkpatrick, managing director of Adecco Retail, employers are constantly on the lookout for talented workers and those with an impressive employment history.
Where less experienced graduates are concerned, such as those straight out of university, he suggests that improving their skill set may be advisable.
"This shows an employer that you are looking at the bigger picture and want to build on your existing qualities," Mr Kirkpatrick proposed.
According to an analysis of employment figures since 1997, published by the Trades Union Congress in September, the number of people unemployed for at least a year could rise from its current level of around 400,000 to 700,000 by the end of 2009.
However, research published by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation last month indicated that employers are still keen to hire skilled graduates, with many willing to pay more for the top candidates.
