East Midlands graduate scheme 'a success'

Published: Tuesday, 14 December 2010   Category: All Graduate job news

A graduate scheme in the East Midlands has been praised as a success by employers and graduates alike.

The Graduate Gateway scheme offers businesses in Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire the chance to take on graduates from local universities.

As part of the scheme, each graduate takes part in a 26-week placement at a company and work on a specific project or assignment.

Participating companies are then given the chance to keep the graduate on after the period of the assignment is up, an opportunity which 75 per cent of employers take.

Kevin Bush, senior HR manager for Nottingham-based windows and conservatories firm Synseal Extrusions, said: "Graduate Gateway offered us an extended opportunity to see exactly what benefits the graduate would bring to the organisation."

Mr Bush's company retained their graduate, Greg Tabberer, who said the scheme "opened up a whole different area … that [he was not] considering before."

Graduates in jobs as part of the scheme get a monthly salary of £1,019.
