Digital skills gap to be tackled with 1,000 IT Internships

Published: Thursday, 10 March 2016   Category: All Graduate Jobs News

UK graduates could soon have the opportunity to work in India as part of a £9 billion deal between the two countries.

The multi-billion pound deal was made in November 2015 between Prime Minister David Cameron and India’s PM, Narendra Modi, when both agreed that 2016 would be the UK-India Year of Education, Research and Innovation.

Now Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and the British Council (BC) are planning internships following successful talks over a partnership.

The scheme will see those lucky enough to be chosen given a year of training at TCS, where they will be given the opportunity to work within its Innovation Labs and software development centres across India.

Applications – completed on the British Council Website – for the internship remain open until 31 March 2016.

The programme will appeal to graduates with interests in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and the first successful applicants are expected to fly to India during the summer.

By working in India, UK graduates will be able to learn and develop some new skills from experts within the business, build relationships and create new ideas which can be utilised by companies within Britain.

What is behind the generation UK-India programme?

The British Council was initially criticised for the programme as it was widely seen as too ambitious to reach the targets that the company had set out.

Its main aim stands to build a relationship between the two countries based on collaboration, engagement and an element of trust, by helping up to 25,000 talented graduates in the UK gain work and study experience in India by 2020.

TCS, a global leader in IT services, digital and business solutions, has been recognized by Brand Finance as one of the big 4 global IT services brands and the company has also seen industry-leading growth over the past few years.
