A successful De Montfort University law graduate has won a respected scholarship to study as a barrister.

The Middle Temple, one of four Inns of Court through which barristers are called the Bar, has provided Faisal Muhammed with £7,500 for his studies.

He was understandably delighted with the scholarship as he said it means that people believe in his skills and potential.

The awarding of the scholarship marks a fourth consecutive year that a student from De Montfort University has won a Middle Temple scholarship for assistance with their Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC).

Mr Muhammed is well aware of how competitive the profession is, but has focused on adding value to his CV to ensure he stands out from the crowd.

As well as work experience with the Citizens’ Advice Bureau, he also worked regularly with a pro bono firm in London which helped those who had lost their benefits entitlements to appeal the decision.

He explained that he was fascinated by the subject when a barrister was invited into the university to talk to students before adding that the advice had helped him make a decision.

Mr Muhammed put together his application for the scholarship and following a successful interview was awarded the Harmsworth Scholarship.

The BPTC is an essential part of becoming a barrister, as it is a mandatory professional qualification that is needed before any practical training can be secured.

He said that gaining extra experience and skills is vital for anyone looking for a career in law, before saying there is no replacement for hands-on experiences.

As part of his work with the pro bono firm, Mr Muhammed was able to learn about the processes that are needed when putting a case before the courts.

Principal lecturer in Law at De Montfort University Debra Brown also congratulated him and revealed she expects him to do well during his career.
