Companies urged to offer internships for graduate scheme hunters

Published: Thursday, 02 September 2010   Category: Work Experience

Graduate work experience programmes should be taken seriously by company bosses, according to a new report published this week by HR Magazine.

The Visit Our Schools and Colleges scheme, which will be launched next month, is designed to pair employers with school and university leavers looking for jobs.

However, with ten per cent of those who graduated in 2009 still struggling to find a full-time role - and 250,000 of this year's A-level students now added to the mix - HR experts are pushing the value of internships.

The National Council for Work Experience (NCWE) claimed that awareness needs to be improved, after finding recently that 82 per cent of graduates did not know about any work experience schemes in their local region.

"Graduates desperately need work experience to make them a better prospect for employers," Heather Collier, a director at NCWE, told the news provider.

Meanwhile, Brian Wisdom, chief executive of People 1st, claimed recently that the hospitality and tourism industry provides plenty of opportunities for graduate job hunters.
