Business creates five graduate scheme places for students

Applegate Marketplace has created 21 new jobs as well as five graduate scheme places for students at Plymouth University.

The digital marketing firm has expanded and created 26 jobs after relocating to a new office in Plymouth, following the awarding of a government grant worth £240,000.

Applegate Marketplace works with large firms such as the Cabinet Office, the Ministry of Defence and BAE Systems, connecting companies looking to purchase products with potential sellers.

Funding from the grant was largely due to the success of Applegate PRO, which is an innovative online buying platform.

Even without promotion, the new service generated a £50,000 request for shop fitting equipment and for use by government departments outside the UK within the first month of the launch in January 2016.

The scheme

Businesses across Devon, Plymouth, Torbay and Somerset have had the opportunity to apply for grants, with the £5 million programme being delivered as a partnership between North Devon+ and Plymouth University, supported by the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership.

Those selected on the Applegate graduate scheme will be given the opportunity to receive a fully-funded degree in Business and Management; then they can become a chartered manager and a member of the Chartered Institute of Management.

The company is working with Petroc, a college of further and higher education, to set up a degree apprenticeship scheme that will eventually pay 25 students to study as well as work at the firm.

The company is hoping that recruiting new talent will lead them to scale-up Applegate PRO, which streamlines requests for quotation and purchase order processes that can take businesses hours or even days, into a quick and easy function that takes minutes.

The development is another step forward for Plymouth University to extend and enhance opportunities for students and organisations in the UK.
