'Broad approach' needed for companies filling graduate vacancies

Published: Friday, 14 January 2011   Category: Career Advice

Companies looking to fill graduate vacancies should widen their searches to all parts of communities.

This is according to Mary Walsh, HSBC's head of diversity, who put forward the opinions at a graduate employment roundtable organised by Recruiter magazine.

Ms Walsh suggested that companies who want to employ university-leavers in graduate jobs should make themselves available to everyone.

The event was attended by a number of diversity experts from companies such as BT, McDonalds and Santander.

"If employers want to get the very best of graduates who are going to be tomorrow's leaders, we have to make sure that we are looking at those who may not be thinking of a career in financial services," Ms Walsh said.

The diversity expert also emphasised the importance of companies making sure that any websites are accessible and easy to use.

HSBC has a range of graduate schemes in sectors such as marketing, retail management and executive management, along with a dedicated website.
