A student from Birmingham City University could become one of the country’s leading card designers after scooping a placement with Hallmark Cards.

Nora Wright had her work spotted at the New Designers show in London, winning an award in the process.

Her ‘Picture Perfect Designs’ were seen by the card retailer at this year’s show and the illustration student won a two-month placement as part of the prize.

The event showcases work from budding designers across the UK, including everything from jewellery and product design to textiles and illustrations.

Ms Wright was picked for the Hallmark Cards Award and admitted to being “surprised, amazed and delighted” by the decision.

The placement, alongside a cash prize, gets underway in September and means she gets hands-on experience with one of the country’s leading design firms.

Ms Wright revealed she was excited to be “working in such a creative environment” and believes she will learn a great deal during the experience.

She explained that she draws her inspiration from British history, including stories, architecture and fashion, adding that much of history is “like a fairy tale”.

A spokesman for Hallmark Cards revealed that Ms Wright’s work was quirky, incorporating a mix of line work and collage that perfectly suited card designs.

Meanwhile, her lecturer in illustration at the BCU’s school of visual communication, Ian Dodds, congratulated her for the achievements seen at the show.

He added that the New Designers event was a huge success for the university, as 27 students from illustrative and graphics backgrounds were able to showcase their works.

This meant they were able to display in front of leading industry buyers, providing a platform for them to really get noticed while gaining plenty of valuable experience.

Mr Dodds explained that the university also secured placed with a number of other leading firms, including Next, M&S, Oxford University Press, Tigerprint and Skew, as well as with other top illustration agencies.
