Bath Innovation Centre harnesses graduate talent with innovation bursary

Published: Wednesday, 09 November 2016   Category: All Graduate Jobs News

The University of Bath Innovation Centre (UBIC) has selected the first group of graduates who will receive innovation bursary scholarships.

Each graduate – 14 have been selected – will receive funding so they can develop their innovative ideas and inventions, and take the first step in the centre’s 6-12-month start-up incubation programme.

Ventures that have received funding include a fleet of electronically assisted cargo bikes, innovation in solar panels and a ‘fast fashion’ app – one of the graduate’s ideas is already being tested and is expected to be launched at the end of November this year.

Quality of the ideas

Ali Hadvizedeh, Deputy Head of Enterprise at the University of Bath, said: “The quality of the ideas that we have seen coming through the bursary scheme is superb and it’s great to see graduates from different disciplines working together.”

The university has been hoping to inspire collaboration across departments and to support graduates with strong, investable ideas.

Graduates selected for the bursary scheme were invited to the centre for two days of workshops and animated interactive sessions, which took place in front of donors, mentors and delegates.

It is hoped that graduates will be given the support necessary to create sustainable businesses, which, in the future, will create wealth and jobs at local, national and eventually international level.

The graduates working at the centre have been looking at the business model of their companies, helping to plan a target market and understand where to find customers.

Access to experienced mentors

Siobain Hone, Graduate Enterprise Manager at the University of Bath, said: “Solid business support, access to experienced mentors and a place to work alongside other entrepreneurs can mean a world of difference to a new venture.”

The University of Bath Innovation Centre provides a unique environment that combines work space, business support and inspiration for high-growth companies and the entrepreneurs that create them.
