A budding artist and student from the University of Brighton is set to see her work displayed in London’s National Portrait Gallery.

Sophie Williams saw her work picked from more than 2,500 entries, submitted from more 90 countries around the world, as part of the BP Portrait Awards.

The winning entry – of her grandparents eating lunch – was an effort to capture the simplicity of the lives they lead, while showing their wisdom through the form of facial impressions.

Judges were so impressed with her work titled Just After Noon that they chose Ms Williams to be one of 55 lucky artists to see their work exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery.

The works will be on display for around a month before they will be taken on a tour of Scotland and Northern Ireland as part of the exhibition.

The 21-year-old student is the second youngest person to be involved in the competition, and uses her family, friends and relatives for inspiration for her work.

Ms Williams initially sketched the scene before adding colour later on. The painting has since taken on a more poignant meaning as her grandmother Joan passed away last year aged 92.

The young artist said her grandmother had enjoyed an “amazing life” and said they were both “really inspirational”.

“I wanted to capture how as you grow old your life becomes simpler,” explained Ms Williams. “There is no conversation in the painting but you can tell how close they are to each other.”

She added that her course in Brighton – which she will complete next year – has helped to develop her skills, while describing her choice to pick the fine arts course as the best decision she has made.

The course enables students to express their own ideas and skills alongside help from tutors so that the budding artists can hone their talents.
