£20m Leeds students’ union gets planning approval

Vast plans to transform the Leeds University students’ union have received planning approval and building work is set to begin before the end of 2015.

The £20 million project should enable Leeds to have facilities that are on par with other institutions across the UK.

The union has a long-term lease from the university and has secured funding for the development, meaning works can progress at the first opportunity.

DLA Architecture created the original application which includes plans to refurbish the existing building both inside and out, as well extending parts of it.

A range of facilities currently exist within the 130,000 square foot union, which is comprised of four interconnected buildings.

Bars, office space, a nightclub and performance venue theatres are included, with the latter all due to be refurbished as part of the plans.

A new Arts Quarter will also be created alongside a new entrance to the building, providing students with more opportunities to showcase their work and abilities.

Student needs were very much at the centre of the new plans with a new terrace bar conservatory set to provide a meeting space that can be closed to the elements to the winter yet open in the summer.

Leeds City Council granted the permission which states that it must be implemented within a three year period while samples of building materials mist also be approved before work gets underway.

As the building will still be in use during the redevelopment works, the refurbishment will be split into three phases.

All of the work is meant to improve the current site without detracting from the character and visual amenity of the building, as well as the university campus and wider location in which it is based.
