EXPIRY NOTICE: This job has now expired and will not be accepting any more applications.

Who we are

You may not have heard of us, but you’ve certainly used our roads. We work hard to keep the roads moving, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Highways Agency, established in 1994, is an executive agency of the Department for Transport and manages one of the Government’s largest assets; almost 5000 miles of English motorways and trunk roads.

We have a small corporate centre in London and eight locations across the country. We also have traffic officers working on motorways based in seven Regional Control Centres and 28 outstations.

Our customers are those who use the roads or those who are affected by them. We put customers first in everything we do, listening to them, and gaining a better understanding of the way our network impacts on them. Through this understanding we are better placed to respond to their needs and expectations. We work in many different ways to meet their needs by keeping the network safe, providing reliable journeys and keeping our customers informed.

What we do

We are responsible for the operation and stewardship of the strategic road network in England on behalf of the Secretary of State for Transport. Our primary functions are to manage traffic, tackle congestion, provide information to road users and improve safety and journey time reliability, whilst respecting and minimising the adverse impact on the environment.

Our road network, ranging from motorways to single carriageway trunk roads (the major A roads), is valued at over £81 billion. It carries a third of all road traffic in England and two thirds of all heavy freight traffic. The network provides a vital service to commerce and industry and to the lives of individuals and communities

Just this year alone we have; opened 11 new strategic road programmes, implemented new plans to tackle incident/road works related congestion, met our targets on air quality, biodiversity, landscape and water quality, been given approval to develop 3 new services, and implemented a £800m maintenance programme all whilst tackling road safety, reducing deaths and serious injury on our networks.

We naturally have high standards and expect you to also, so, give us your best, and we will help you to grow and flourish into a leader.
