In December 2003 our client announced the acquisition of Great Lakes Chemical CorporationÆs fine chemicals business based at Halebank, Widnes in the UK, extending our clientÆs existing capability in both contract, custom and toll manufacturing, and own products marketing.
Now one of the largest independent manufacturers of fine and speciality chemicals in the UK, our client now has two production sites, in Workington and Halebank, employing 210 personnel and with a sales turnover of million (Euro 52 million).
Our client has an enviable technology range to bring your concept to commercial reality. Their primary technologies are Phosgenation, Grignard, Sodium Dispersion, Bromination, Chlorination, Vilsmeier, Ene Reaction and Benzylation.
The position will be based at Halebank, which is a top-tier COMAH site but could involve projects at the Workington site. Halebank carries out batch synthesis in several key technologies; the site produces a wide range of products and executes extensive toll manufacturing services for the major players in the industry. These opportunities have arisen during a review of the Technology strategy for the business following our clientÆs acquisition of the Halebank site approximately 16 months ago.
The person appointed will work within the Development Chemist group, working on new product development following the process through to its life cycle from the initial laboratory development work to the pilot plant and finally onto the commissioning stages to manufacture.
This group of Shift Plant Support Technologists will have responsibility for the operation and supervision of the pilot plant and provide technical backup to the Shift Production Team.
You will need to have a flexible approach, as different levels of support depending on business needs will be required; in practice, this will require working different shift patterns or day-working to enable the company to meet customer expectations. Candidates should be able to demonstrate their interest and capability for continuous improvement, coupled with the highest professional standards.
Applicants will have a degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, must be a team player, be self-motivated and have excellent communication skills. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a high level of technical competence.
