EXPIRY NOTICE: This job has now expired and will not be accepting any more applications.

This KTP project offers a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious graduate to launch a career in industry with the support of company and academic mentors.

Aylesford Newsprint Limited (ANL) is a Kent-based newsprint paper manufacturer, producing on average 400,000 tonnes of recycled newsprint every year from 500,000 tonnes of recovered paper. Paper has been manufactured on the Aylesford site since 1922 and since 1993 Aylesford Newsprint has become a leader in the production of 100% recycled newsprint.

The project is to develop a novel process for the thermochemical conversion of paper mill waste into clean energy, reducing environmental impact. The project aims to do this by optimizing the recovery of paper crumble through combustion and combine gasification of paper waste to create a novel closed loop thermo-chemical process.

You will need a BSc (Hons) in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline at 2.1 level or above, plus a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or closely related field. A background in biomass gasification, fluidized bed reactors, catalytic conversion and multiphase flow simulation codes would be advantageous. Preference will be given to those with previous experience of developing and operating thermochemical conversion reactors at lab or commercial scale levels, particularly for applications involving recycled materials.

You will gain:

  •          Transfer of research outcomes into a manufacturing environment
  •  Project management
  •     Communications, report writing, coaching and presentations skills
  •     The preparation of articles for technical publications
  •     Experience of design, development and implementation of a dual fluidised bed reactor, operating as a closed-loop system.
  •     Understanding of the mass and energy balance in engineering design context.
  •     Experience of environmental, economic and social sustainability assessment, particularly for thermochemical processing.

You will be supported to enhance practical skills in the laboratories and to identify appropriate training and development courses for technical and commercial skills.

You will be encouraged to become a member of an appropriate professional institution such as the Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE)

 Challenge and opportunities:

*embedding new production and material technologies in a continuous-production commercial environment

·         *interacting with all levels of staff within ANL, their partners and stakeholders

·         *Developing knowledge in Waste to Energy technologies, an area that is fast growing worldwide.

·         *Gaining valuable technical and business-based experience

We are looking for good experimental skills; ability to balance technical issues with commercial constraints; good inter-personal skills; positive attitude; attention to detail and quality control; pride in work; good PC skills. You must be able to work independently, communicate well with all levels of technical and administration staff, and contribute to team work.
