This KTP project offers a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious graduate to launch a career in the profession whilst studying for a PhD with the support of company and academic mentors. The successful individual will also have the opportunity to gain Independent Prescribing rights and also other higher qualifications such as Professional Fellowships.

BBR Optometry Ltd is a successful independent privately owned optometry practice. In addition to standard services, such as the provision of spectacles and contact lenses, BBR is a leading provider of primary care functions; such as eye examinations, ocular health investigations, independent prescribing and enhanced primary services. The practice has a large base of shared care initiatives, and delivers ophthalmic consultancy in the fields of instrumentation and pharmaceuticals and specialist contact lenses.

Aston University is collaborating with BBR Optometry Ltd to create an easily transferable model for managing and communicating with vulnerable groups of patients with age-related eye conditions to enhance the effectiveness of treatment, which can be implemented in other independent optometry practices.

We are looking for confident, credible and personable candidates with good inter-personal skills to work within BBR Optometry’s small team and with its collaborators, clients and other practices. You should be a self-starter with the ability to show high levels of initiative, motivation and the ability to work autonomously to agreed targets and goals. You should be able to articulate ideas effectively.

You will need a Bachelor’s degree in Optometry at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) and you will need to be registered with the General Optical Council in the UK. Excellent multi-faceted communication skills are essential as you will be working closely with academic and company leadership teams, vulnerable groups and NHS managers.

You will be able to develop skills in project management, the creation of business plans, communicating with diverse patient groups and the preparation of reports, articles and training materials. You will also develop your technical skills in understanding the latest research, emerging treatments and diagnosis techniques to inform patient care pathways and suitability for vulnerable groups.

The KTP Associate Development Programme will give you the management skills required to successfully deliver the project. In addition you will have a generous personal development budget for industry standard training, and you will be registered for a PhD at Aston University. You will also need to become registered to prescribe medication which will require you to undertake the ‘Independent Prescriber’s qualification the cost of which is covered by the personal development budget. The experience gained will enable you to apply to become a Fellow of the College of Optometrists, a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometrists, Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association and a Fellow of the European Academy of Optometry and Optics.

Future prospects include the possibility of partnership within BBR Optometry via a Share purchase scheme at completion.
