Our demanding three-year graduate training schemes (general management or finance) recruit people with the potential to go beyond management and into leadership. The most successful and dedicated will shape the future of health care.

NHS Scotland currently employs approximately 140,000 staff who work across 14 regional NHS Boards, seven Special NHS Boards and one public health body.

We want to recruit up to eight candidates for our Graduate Training Scheme.

You need to have:

  • the passion, energy, commitment and confidence to lead in the NHS in Scotland
  • a minimum of a 2:2 degree
  • You'll also need to be prepared to work anywhere in Scotland.


We'll provide the successful candidates with the skills and experience for a top-flight career in the NHS.

General Management Scheme

We employ graduates with many diverse backgrounds and experience. As such we make a commitment support successful candidates through an appropriate masters level qualification.

Finance Management Scheme

As part of our commitment to building NHS leaders of the future and meeting good governance you will be fully supported through the Chartered Institute of Public Finance Professional Qualification.

Combined Learning

In addition to the formal qualification you will receive a substantial in house training program to develop your leadership and management skills in a public sector environment. As part of this you will form a cohort group with Doctors learning soft skills and develop strategies to deal with challenges faced within your role.

You'll also have the chance to undertake a Community Challenge, were you'll work as a team over 24 hours to achieve an objective benefiting the local community.

The three years in-work training is designed to give you:

  • A broad knowledge of the NHS
  • Real management responsibilities
  • An opportunity to choose a specialist area of work and study.
  • The chance to work in various sections of the NHS experiencing the various challenges and rewards it brings


In addition you will participate in a range of development opportunities such as

  • Learning alongside clinical staff and finance managers in an action learning set
  • Personal coaching and mentoring
  • Attending master classes in human resources management, health information systems and product management


The Requirements

We need leaders who can:

  • Drive excellence in service delivery consistently and make sure patients are involved and informed wherever they live
  • Improve the health of the population by working with partner organisations
  • Make the tough decisions that are sometimes needed about the allocation of resources and services, keeping the needs of the patient uppermost
  • Operate in a political and public spotlight
  • Work closely with doctors, nurses and other professionals to ensure the best decisions about modern and reliable services are made
  • Act at all times with the highest integrity, commitment and energy.
  • We need people whose heart is in the service and whose mind is sharp enough to deal with the many challenges involved.
