Location - Edinburgh and Lothian
Aarkid Ltd have a position for Java Programmer to work on an exciting, new 3D visualisation product. This will involve programming for web applications to create a new platform for virtual trade shows. This is a 12 month placement with view to permanent hire. Location is flexible but will initially require one day a week in North Berwick.
Building on existing company IP, the project is to design and deliver a platform for the next generation of virtual product presentation spaces, for web and mobile delivery. This will allow manufacturers and potential users of complex products, e.g. hospital equipment, to configure and test the product using the 3D visualisation platform.
The platform provides a commercially viable “virtual space” where manufacturers and retailers can upload and manage 3D assets. The interactive 3D assets are displayed in a web/mobile friendly interface to general users. Each set of assets can be easily configured (based on simple XML rules) to represent product configuration options for the end user.
The project goal is to complete the design and build of the new platform, ready for commercial use.
Code components (both in progress and completed units) will be uploaded and maintained in an online SVN code repository. Units will be compiled into the application centrally by Aarkid lead programmer and full build releases published online for the assessment and testing phase at each iteration (expected at 2 week intervals) throughout development.
Success will be determined once the first commercial project is completed using the platform.
There will be an initial period where the graduate will be required to complete small tasks on existing live projects., to familiarise them with our existing application architecture, working methods, and our clients’ needs. Additionally this short period will help us assess the strengths of the graduate in order to allocate appropriate tasks on the main project.
Aarkid use an “agile” development methodology, so the main project tasks will involve:
Completing specific individual Java programming tasks on the project and submit finished code to a shared SVN repository
Throughout the project, working with files that complete server-side functions, etc
At the end of each iteration, testing and assessing their own work and offer constructive criticism on the current status and progression of the wider project
At the beginning of each iteration, the graduate will have real opportunity to become involved in design, not only for their next task, but also in designing the shape of the overall platform architecture.
At the end of the project development, the graduate will help with setting up the first commercial project using the new platform. We expect a permanent full time post to be available at that time, and it’s expected that this post will be offered to the graduate.
The graduate will report to, and work closely with the small development team, some of the whom are distributed in remote offices (a Skype account will be provided for daily conferencing.)
Due to the dispersed team, the location of the placement is flexible. The graduate will either be able to work from the office in North Berwick or from home (with a day in the office once a week for the first period). Therefore, broadband internet connection, and working on own windows PC is expected. Test units for any mobile devices (such as iPad) will be supplied by Aarkid where required.

Knowledge and/or experience of Google Web Toolkit (GWT) Java would be an advantage
Knowledge and/or experience of any of the following would be an advantage
