If you like trying out new technology you’ll love this role. After all you’ll be testing the very latest software, systems and products here at GCHQ, one of the UK’s three intelligence services (alongside MI5 and MI6). We use some of the world’s most sophisticated technology to intercept communications and electronic signals from our headquarters in Cheltenham. This information is turned into intelligence, which helps our government protect the UK, its people and institutions. So it’s essential that the systems we use are particularly robust and reliable. That’s where you come in.
You’ll be responsible for implementing a clearly defined test approach you’ll start by identifying the appropriate techniques, tools and guidelines and the resources required. Using a tailored version of the IBM Rational Unified Process you’ll be collaborating closely with software developers. So you’ll need to know enough about software development to be able to discuss issues and advise them on testing methods as well as challenging assumptions where necessary. Naturally, in addition to carrying out, monitoring and evaluating the results of tests, you’ll also provide accurate feedback, raising any issues of concern with the Project Test Manager.
On top of an enquiring mind and unquenchable thirst for finding out how things work, you’ll have a solid understanding of testing approaches and techniques together with excellent diagnostic and problem solving skills. A degree, membership of a relevant Professional Institute or work experience in this field is also essential.
