Job summary

Spòrsnis, a voluntary, community organisation based in Ness, Isle of Lewis, are recruiting for a recent graduate for a 6 month journalism role.  The successful graduate will be responsible for coming up with innovative ways to increase readership, and using new technologies to produce a ‘talking newspaper’ to benefit patrons with visual and physical impairments.

Job Description

The post also gives the opportunity for digital development through website, social networking and e-distribution of publications and content development through research and journalism including photography, desk top publishing and printing. The current digital activities are minimal, with a basic Spòrsnis website and facebook page for Fios. It is hoped that development of these will increase awareness of facilities, sports programme and events, as well as generate income through membership sales and subscriptions to both the Fios publication and electronic newspaper.

This position is part funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the European Regional Development Fund.

Skills / Experience

Essential:

•        Excellent communication skills;

•        Ability to write articles and newspaper content with minimal supervision;

•        Good IT skills

•        Social media skills, incl. blogging;

•        Good administrative skills;

•        Good telephone manner;

•        Experience in dealing with the public;

•        Ability to work on own initiative;

•        A full driving licence is required.

Desirable:

•        Good research and analytical skills;

•        The ability to record and edit audio files;

•        Some experience in industry-standard DTP software i.e. ‘In Design’.

Qualifications

Degree in relevant discipline
