Belford Research Ltd are looking for a graduate Laser Laboratory Assistant to help carry out testing, diagnostics and calibration with the aim of extending our LIDT (Laser Induced Damage Threshold) test-house capability before it can become industrially viable. The graduate will be expected to have a hands-on attitude but will receive full training in this exciting, unique 12 month placement opportunity based in Edinburgh.

Belford Research Ltd test optics for large companies that make lasers, ensuring independent quality control. We test the energy outputs of different optic coatings, which vary the properties. This is a growing market with competition primarily based in the US, and we are looking to expand the British market. The graduate will be helping to set up the optics for a new product, designed by our experienced team and help to further automate the process.

We aim to extend our LIDT (Laser Induced Damage Threshold) test-house capability. Within this planned expansion, is the extenstion of our test wavelength to the mid IR region. We require an assistant to set up optical laser paths and to manipulate banch optics for beam diagnostics.

Key tasks will include:

  • Testing and commissioning optical equipment such as: IR cameras and associated optical feeds
  • Translation XYZ stages and associated control software
  • Telescopic beam astigmatic correction
  • Beam diagnostics
  • Several photodiode setups for pulse duration and pulse energy/power calibrations.


These are all time consuming precision exercises. Much research has been done in-house evolving an appropriate laser delivery systems, it will now require inter and intra calibration before it can become industrially viable.

This is a small laboratory environment with experienced staff, stringently high standards and a very good reputation in the laser field, so will be an excellent learning experience for the graduate, in terms the quaility of training received, and will be a good stepping stone into the industry.



  • A hands-on approach

  • Some knowledge and/or experience of good laboratory practice
  • Attention to detail
  • Good analytical skills
  • Good level of competence with user friendly software packages such as Microsoft Office


  • An aptitude with mechanical/electrical devices is an advantage



Undergraduate degree or above in any physical science or engineering
