Job summary

Brown Brothers (Manufacturing) Ltd have an exciting opportunity for a graduate to join their expanding export /import team within the business to enable growth potentials across the group. Being a subsidiary of Browns Food Group with turnover of 115M the group can offer exciting opportunities within a well developed team, the candidate will gain extensive experience within an importing and exporting environment. This is a 12 month placement based in Dumfries.

Project Description

To build experience within our export and import team within the business to enable continual growth and evolve non EU exports.

Role Description

The successful candidate will follow the training set out in the IOE - Certified International Trade Advisor qualification to enable the graduate to initially learn the strategy and reasons behind international trade, moving to the planning and operations aspects. At the same time, internally, they will develop basic operation skills behind export and importation, dealings with HMRC, DEFRA/RPA, transportation links, external warehousing and worldwide countries. The candidate will also be given time to develop contacts within industry to look at potential opportunities for UK/EU and non EU trading.

After training the graduate will work within the team and expand and explore various opportunities to expand the export/import potentials, and build contacts worldwide to drive sales products.

1st Period – importation and CITA syllabus. Detailed internal training

2nd Period – Import Licensing – This stage will allow the candidate to progress within the department and realise possible potentials and will begin to build contacts and relationships with current and new agents

3rd Period – Licence Applications / Trading – This stage will allow the candidate to begin to start driving forward the trading side of the operation in terms of building new contacts and driving the export to Non EU countries of products traded and also manufactured within the group.

Skills / Experience

The ideal candidate will have:


·         Excellent communication and numeracy skills

·         Excellent attention to detail

·         Strong team-worker

·         Self motivated and able to work proactively, alone

·         Strong interest in trading/sales.


·         Languages beneficial but not essential

·         Experience with Food Industry would be beneficial but not essential.


·         BSC Honours Degree Level


Over time the right candidate will gain a strong understanding of the logistics of the department and contribute to its further growth in their area of specialisation. As a result of their training and being part of this project, it will lead to them developing their own portfolio of international customers and suppliers.

They will also receive 3 days training from the Talent Scotland Graduate Placement Programme.
