Job summary

The Isle Martin Trust (IMT), based in Ullapool, Ross-shire, is recruiting for a recent graduate for a 10 month role focussing on raising awareness of Isle Martin.  The role will be to develop a robust and strategic business plan which details the options available to improve the island’s infrastructure and increase visitor numbers.

Job Description

The community have owned Isle Martin, an uninhabited island which formerly had a population of more than 50 people, since 1999. However due to the condition of the island’s four buildings and access issues relating to the mainland pier, visitor numbers are very low. As a result little income, which could be used to sustain and improve the island, is generated.

Therefore IMT wish to investigate and develop a robust and strategic business plan which details the options available to improve the island’s infrastructure, increase visitor numbers and develop Isle Martin as a social enterprise.

The successful graduate will be required to:

•        Undertake an assessment of the Island’s present facilities – including the buildings, pier, power supply, etc.

•        Carry out local tourism market analysis – determine what is available currently, what would attract visitors, what opportunities are available for the island, etc.

•        Identify sustainable business ideas for income generation.

•        Present options and findings in a Strategic Business Plan for IMT.

Completing these tasks will allow IMT to quantify the different options available and select the most appropriate. The graduate will also lay the foundations for a capital works programme by allowing IMT to determine the investment required to realise the opportunities for the island.

This position is part funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the European Regional Development Fund.
