A specific degree discipline isn't required, your personal skills are far more important.
To succeed in Media Sales you are required to sell to and build long term business relationships with senior personnel at your clients. They could be Marketing Directors, HR Directors or even Managing Directors, so intelligence, gravitas and strong communication skills are paramount.
As clients have a wide choice of where they can advertise your role is to persuade them that your magazine/newspaper/radio station is the most appropriate for them. To succeed at this you need to understand their business and demonstrate how and why their advert will work the best in your media product, as opposed to anywhere else. To do this determination, professionalism and strong powers of persuasion are essential.
What will I be doing?
To begin with your role will be selling advertising space over the telephone; this is where you learn the sales skills and gain media industry knowledge that will be the bedrock of your future career. You generally start off selling smaller adverts, called classified adverts and when you have proved yourself here career development can be swift. Your role will evolve to selling complicated, long term advertising campaigns to larger clients requiring you to meet your clients face to face and present how and why your media products fit with their marketing strategies. If man management is an area you want to progress into, then it is an option too.
