The British Council language assistants programme has been running for 106 years. It places UK undergraduates and graduates in schools, colleges and universities overseas for up to one full academic year to assist with the teaching of English and raising cultural awareness.
The programme spans four continents, placing around 2,500 people in 15 countries worldwide - Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Ecuador, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Paraguay, Spain and Switzerland. In addition to the experience of living and working abroad, you will also improve your own language skills and inspire and motivate your students.
Your role will be to improve your students confidence in communicating in English and help classes to become more interactive and fun by discussing contemporary aspects of youth culture in the UK. You will do this by planning activities and games and using photos, travel guides and maps from the UK as well as texts from newspapers, magazines and the internet. The British Council has dedicated websites to support you with your role from lesson plans to classroom management for all ages.
You will usually work between 12-20 hours a week and receive a local salary, leaving you with time to explore! In addition, with an increasingly competitive global job market, the knowledge gained from working overseas, experiencing new cultures and languages can hugely enhance your employability and make you stand out from the crowd!
