Acclaimed Top 100 UK tech start-up & Big Data Venture Challenge winner Clear Returns, is looking for a graduate with a background in Computer Science, Applied Statistics or a similar field, to create and develop the predictive models behind their groundbreaking retail intelligence tool. This is an exciting 12 month placement based in Glasgow.

Winners at the Big Data Venture Challenge in Rome, IBM SmartCamp finalist, a Scottish Enterprise High Growth Startup and recent High Impact Business winner in the Entrepreneurial Spark accelerator programme - Clear Returns is not your usual employer. The Clear Returns team are applying predictive analytics and big data mining to online retail, predicting returns to preserve retailers’ profit margins.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a gifted graduate to join this high potential start-up and work with a highly motivated, talented and driven team.

Role Description

As a key member of the start-up team, your role will be to:

·         Establish scalable, efficient, automated processes for large scale data analyses, model development, model validation and model implementation

·         Determine methodologies needed; apply such methodologies (e.g. neural nets, CART, Bayesian methods, etc.) on retail and customer data

·         Use statistical and machine learning techniques to create develop, maintain and enhance core statistical models/algorithms that integrate with the Clear Returns intelligence products

·         Perform and critique appropriate statistical analyses on retail and logistics data using software such as R and SAS, and/or Python.

Start-ups are not for everyone - the successful candidate must be comfortable to take the risk that comes with working in the intense, stimulating but comparatively insecure environment of the early stage start-up.

The candidate will need to produce work of an extremely high standard – but successes achieved in this company will not go unrecognised, and will allow you to progress far more rapidly and rewardingly than in a large organisation.

Skills / Experience


·         Knowledge and/or experience in data extraction & transformation, relational databases & SQL

·         Strong analytical skills

·         Knowledge and/or competency in major analytics software packages (e.g., SPSS, R, etc)

·         The desire, courage and motivation to work in a fast paced, boot-strapping start-up environment, with the goal of building a spectacularly successful business

·         Ability to take initiative and deliver tangible results under deadlines

·         Ability to work independently with minimal direction and initially with limited resources

·         Breadth as well as depth in problem solving, with the ability to apply appropriate theory, explore approaches, simulate, and implement

·         Strong attention to detail to identify data relationships, trends, and anomalies

·         Ability to apply theoretical or experiential knowledge on machine learning to solve large scale retail and logistics problems

·         Curiosity and interest in the problem


Some experience in working with:

·         Big Data sets - preferably in retail, finance or e-commerce industry

·         Cloud based architectures and deployment frameworks for machine learning algorithms (e.g. Hadoop, etc.)

·         Experience and/or knowledge in SPSS and R


·         A Degree, ideally at post-graduate level, in Computer Science, Applied Statistics or a related field.

·         Clear Returns are based in Entrepreneurial Spark, Glasgow, but offer the option to work remotely.
