Locogen are a renewable energy company looking to recruit a graduate to further develop their community liaison and marketing activities for projects across the UK. This is a 12 month role with potential for extension, based in Edinburgh and the successful candidate would join a team of experienced planning consultants and engineers.

Project Description

Locogen is an independent team of planners and engineers with expertise in the development and implementation of low carbon generating technologies. Locogen has been operational for 3 years and our current team of 11 staff has a combined 40 years of renewable energy experience. The company's focus to date has been on the development of wind, hydro, solar and biomass technologies but we are constantly expanding our experience base and are actively involved in anaerobic digestion and tidal projects.

Work within the company is split between developing our own portfolio of renewable electricity generating assets, and providing consultancy support for various third parties (private companies, public sector and individuals). Our consultancy work includes the completion of feasibility surveys, planning works, resource assessments, and business plans for commercial scale renewable projects. Locogen are also very active in completing design and construction works associated with renewable technologies including procurement, clearing of conditions, construction and commissioning. The majority of Locogen's operations are currently within Scotland but there is an increasing level of work across the UK.

This growth has led to a need for increased community and marketing engagement.

Role Description

This is a great opportunity to experience a wide range of work with a team of planning consultants and engineers with expertise in the development and implementation of low carbon generating technologies and to help Scotland and the UK achieve its renewable potential. If the placement is successful then there is good scope for full time employment.

The successful candidate would be primarily based in the wind development team and the key
objectives of this placements are as follows:

Community liaison: to develop and manage the companies community liaison procedure

In recognition of increasing public interest in renewable energy projects (specifically onshore wind), Locogen want to take every opportunity to develop strong links with community groups and/or development trusts in areas where Locogen intend to develop projects. The successful candidate would be required to:

  • research current community benefit models across the industry and evaluate new guidance that is being proposed on a national and local level.
  • once a suitable model has been developed, alongside senior staff, work alongside the project planning and development team as community liaison to maximise the benefit to both the relevant communities and Locogen's development goals. This would involve approaching multiple community groups and building strong working relationships.

 

Marketing Support: Provide ongoing marketing support

Locogen have established marketing materials and procedures but are constantly looking at new ways to increase awareness of the company and activities (e.g. through increased use of social media and the existing website). The successful candidate would be tasked with:

  • providing regular updates to the news and case studies sections of the company website
  • further development and management of Locogen’s use of social media
  • develop new ways to increase awareness of the company amongst landowners, farmers and the commercial sector
  • opportunities to attend trade shows and exhibitions with senior staff to promote Locogen’s activities.

 

Project support: Provide general project support to the development team through use

The core aim of this placement will be the delivery of the two main responsibilities stated above. There will however be an opportunity for the successful candidate to support the wider project development process for a range of renewable technologies. This will include the use of wind industry software and in house training will be provided as necessary.

Skills/Experience

Essential:

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Detailed understanding of the full Microsoft Office package
  • Able to work independently
  • Good organisational skills.

 

Desirable:

  • Experience using social media for non personal uses
  • Proven ability to utilise technical computer software
  • Good understanding of the UK renewable energy market.

 

Qualifications

Essential

Undergraduate or postgraduate degree. Given the wide scope of the role there is no specific degree subject sought.

Ideal

The core aims of the role would suit media/marketing background but the technical aspects of role may also be suited to those with a science or engineering background, e.g. the successful candidate's studies may have included modules on renewable energy.
