This KTP project offers a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious graduate to launch a career in industry with the support of company and academic mentors.  Black Pepper Software Ltd (BPS) has joined forces with Aston University on this KTP project to develop and embed data analytics based on multiple statistical models into BPS enabling the development of new products, revenue models and business sectors.

BPS is a leading agile IT consultancy.  The core business has been the development and supply of bespoke software to “blue-chip” companies. The company have developed a new product, Companion software, which can be used in exhibitions and shopping malls to gather visitor data (location, movements, and transactions) through a smart-phone app.  The collected data enables visitor behaviour monitoring and disseminates targeted information to individuals providing business intelligence to corporate users. As a KTP associate on this project you will be responsible for transferring knowledge of sophisticated mathematical-modelling and data-mining into the company. You will create an appropriate statistical and machine-learning framework for modelling the movement of visitors through an exhibition, segmenting customers, and presenting results to non-expert users.  These will be used to develop a server-based system that will provide advanced analytical capability to a range of end users. 

You will have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) at 2:1 in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics based subject, preferably involving both mathematics and computing. You will have experience of statistical data modelling or data mining; programming in an appropriate language (Matlab or Java preferred); object-oriented software design skills; presentation of complex analyses to untrained users is advantageous.  You should have excellent interpersonal skills, be self-motivated, confident and capable of working effectively on your own initiative to agreed targets and goals as well as in a team and be able to interact at all levels within industry. 

 You will gain skills in;

  • analytic methods, mathematical-modelling;
  • machine-learning models;
  • data mining (Crisp-DM) and presentation;
  • building the business case for exploiting the new knowledge in other existing / new company products. 

In addition you will gain practical skills in Agile software development, working closely with clients to develop the user stories that are the basis of this methodology.  Customer satisfaction (on time delivery and within budget), frequent delivery of working / quality software, and face to face communication with clients are core principles of Agile.

As a KTP Associate on this project you will have a generous personal development budget of £4000 in addition to a KTP Management Training Programme and the opportunity to complete a Masters in Research at Aston.

You will be employed by Aston University and will work at Black Pepper Software Ltd in Leamington Spa.
