An advertising media buyers works for agencies on a consultative basis providing advice on the best media to use for specific campaigns and defined budgets. They are responsible for buying advertising space in newspapers and magazines and time on radio, television and cinema commercials. The objective for buyers is to reach the maximum number of customers within a designated target audience at the best price.
Media buyers monitor the number of transactions and are required to write reports to provided up-to-date feedback for the clients on the impact of the campaign and media used. Buyers work on several accounts at any one time. Depending on the size of the company a buyers role may be combined with that of a media planner. A career in advertising is very competitive and although there is no formal entry requirement, a degree or BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) is often required by large agencies. Smaller organisations put more emphasis on relevant work experience.
Professional qualifications exist. The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA) and Communication Advertising and Marketing Education Foundation (CAM) run industry recognised courses. Competition to get into advertising is tough and practical work experience as well as additional qualifications demonstrates your commitment to working within this exciting industry.
Starting salaries for media buyers range from £14,000 - £16,000. With experience this can rise to up to £30,000 and career progression is based upon experience and ability. Senior buyers can earn as much as £50,000 and above and head-hunting is common.
