Graduate Job Profile - Design Engineer

Design engineers help to create designs of new products. This can include from domestic electrical appliances through to technical products such as telecommunication systems.

Design Engineers take into account strength, safety, efficiency and costs. They have knowledge of a variety of engineering subjects and many are qualified mechanical, electrical, electronics or civil engineers. Design engineers normally work in a team with other engineers and engineering technicians. The team leader is usually an incorporated engineer or a chartered engineer.

Design engineers require a BTEC HNC/HND or degree in subjects such as engineering product design, industrial design, computer-aided design engineering, engineering design and manufacture, and metallurgy and materials. Other relevant subjects include materials, mechanical, electrical or civil engineering. Opportunities for design engineers exist in many industries including construction, construction engineering, building services, electronics, shipbuilding, aerospace, power generation, railways, electronics, and vehicle and consumer goods manufacture.

Graduates going into this role can expect to earn around £16,000 a year. With experienced incorporated engineers earn about £30,000 - £40,000.
