Who are we?

Network Rail owns and operates Britain’s rail infrastructure, incorporating a vast network of rail, signals, bridges, tunnels, electrified lines and telecommunications. We manage 17 of the largest stations in the country and 2.75 million people travel on our network every day.

Our company was formed in 2002, and we’ve achieved an enormous amount over the recent years. If you want to look back on some of the most groundbreaking, high profile projects and infrastructure and think ‘I did that’, Network Rail could be just the place for you.

There are over 33,000 people in Network Rail. We’re all determined to continue to improve our business, and our graduates have an important part to play in shaping our future. We’re extremely ambitious and constantly evolving, so we’re looking for self-starters who are ready to play their part in the landmark projects we’ve got on the horizon. Projects like the £400m redevelopment of King’s Cross station, and a £3.5bn investment programme to increase train capacity to and through London.

Training and Development

Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Programmes

Our structured, accredited Engineering programmes offer a mixture of personal skills training, technical training and work based placements that allow you to get hands-on experience of the railway. Throughout the programme you can expect to have a mentor (a senior engineer), as well as support from the graduate development team. The Engineering programme starts in September with a three-week induction that includes an overview of the organisation and an introduction to the railway. Because we want our engineering graduates to have a broad and holistic overview of all aspects of the business, the programme is made up of placements in the different technical spheres. This is complemented by specialist technical training in either telecoms, signalling, track, or electrification and plant according to individual choice. You will also participate in a series of graduate master classes that will provide you with an introduction to the basic principles of management.

General Management

After an intensive six-week induction programme at our leadership and development centre, Westwood, you will then participate in a nine-month placement with a senior manager in a specific part of the business – Operations and Customer Service, Infrastructure Investment or Maintenance. After your nine-month placement, you will start your first job for a minimum of 12 months before your next career move is agreed.

Finance and Commercial Property

The Finance programme starts with an intensive six-week induction spent at our leadership and development centre, Westwood, followed by five weeks’ foundation training at the financial training college for the Certificate level of your CIMA.

The Commercial Property scheme is a broad-based programme that leads to Chartered status. As well as giving you an unrivalled breadth of experience across all disciplines of commercial property, Network Rail will pay for you to take your RICS exams. On top of that, you’ll receive the
support of a designated manager as a mentor.
