Overview

The National Audit Office (NAO) is a public sector organisation independent of government and the Civil Service. Through our financial audit work we audit the accounts of all government departments and a wide range of other public sector bodies. We also produce around 60 Value for Money reports a year for Parliament on the economy, efficiency and effectiveness with which government departments and other bodies have used their resources in delivering particular projects. It’s an exciting time to join the NAO, as our role is particularly relevant in the current fiscal climate.

Who are we?

The NAO plays a pivotal role in the workings of government. Our value for money reports lead to positive changes in the way central government delivers public services and our financial audit work saves the tax payer millions of pounds each year. 

Our clients range from large government departments such as Treasury and the Ministry of Defence, through to smaller agencies such asEnglish Heritage and the Food Standards Agency. We also have a number of international clients including the United Nations and provide support to audit institutions in developing countries.

Career Opportunities

We are recruiting now for graduates to join our scheme in September 2013. Trainees will begin their careers as Assistant Auditors and will study for the ACA Qualification, the completion of which will lead to qualification as a chartered accountant through the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Trainees will be involved in our financial audit work, and also have opportunities to work on our high profile value for money studies.

Training and Development

As well as the funding of your professional training, a career at the NAO also offers an impressive variety of other training and career development opportunities, designed to improve both business awareness and personal effectiveness. We see our trainees as the future leaders of the organisation and once qualified, graduates can apply to join our ‘Future Leaders’ talent management programme which supports their development and prepares them for career progression. 

Whilst working towards the ACA, trainees will receive support from the NAO’s Professional Training team and a Development Manager who will be responsible for your development throughout your training. You will be given the chance to quickly put into practice the skills and knowledge you learn at college and will be given ownership of work at an early stage in your career.

What we look for

Our academic requirements are a minimum of a 2:1 Degree in any discipline and 300 UCAS points (or equivalent) taken from the top 3 A-levels. No previous relevant work experience is required but candidates are expected to demonstrate an interest in accountancy and achieving the ACA qualification.
