Case Studies

Andrew Hedgecock - BSc (Hons) Modern Languages (French and Spanish) and Marketing Studies
Exel Graduate Management Programme

After leaving school, I went to the University of Salford for 4 years to study for an Bachelor of Science Degree in Modern Languages and Marketing where I obtained a 2:1 Honours degree. I joined Exel two months after leaving university and have not looked back since.

Obviously having done a languages degree I had spent a significant amount of time abroad prior to joining Exel, and wanted to continue moving about both from country to country and within the UK. Exel was to provide me with the platform to do this, at the same time as providing me with an excellent training programme and developing my leadership skills, whilst paying a competitive salary.

After applying for the job on the Exel website, I went through a gruelling selection process comprising of an initial telephone interview, followed by two assessment centres and a final interview. Just over a week after my final interview I received a call telling me that I had been successful, and that I could start with the company three weeks later.

Graduates are spread out across all sectors and as such, the customers you will work with depend on the sector that you work in. Having said that, there is scope for you to move across sectors, and in many circumstances it is actually encouraged to do so, in order that you can see how other business units operate. I started with, and continue to work in, the Industrial sector.

Throughout my time with Exel I have had the opportunity to work on several high-profile contracts whilst at the same time taking part on a graduate training scheme that really is second to none. The company is totally committed to the development of its future leaders, and the programme has the full backing of senior management (many of whom started on the graduate scheme!). The programme combines between 2 and 4 operational
