Company Profile - Centrica PLC

Who are we?

Centrica has gone through a significant transformation during its first seven years. We were essentially a gas supplier in a monopoly market. Today we sell a wide range of products and services in the UK and overseas, competing strongly in highly competitive markets. It's a transformation that we are extremely proud of.

We are also very proud that a number of different teams and projects across the group in the past year have been recognised by external awards and thorough industry surveys including winning the 2005 Personnel today Excellence in Graduate Recruitment award.

Career Opportunities

General Management Programme You will work in four roles during the programme, maybe more. Moving around can be demanding, sometimes even unsettling. So why do we use this approach? Because it rapidly transforms you from graduate to manager. You'll learn to lead teams of experienced colleagues, run complex projects and deliver insights. You'll build your network and may well work abroad. All within 24 months.

Finance Programme This three-year programme will give you three placements and exposure to our finance functions, to the Centrica businesses, and to excellent business, technical and professional training. You will also study for either a CIMA or ACCA qualification, and we'll help you to pay for your qualifications and design your placements to support your study.

Information Systems Programme You'll start with one week of Centrica graduate training and three weeks of IS-specific induction. Your first year will then combine technical and management training with six-month placements in our Service Delivery and Brand Functions. The second year could take you into any part of our business, giving you the opportunity to work on large-scale projects or key technologies.

Engineering Programme You'll start along with all the Graduates that join Centrica on a one-week training and induction programme followed by local induction. Your first year will then combine technical and management training with six-month placements within the Asset Operations Directorate at either a Gas Terminal / Platform or Power Station. During your 3 years on the scheme you will have a variety of placements and be able to work toward chartered engineering status.

Training and Development

Within your first six months alone, your training modules will cover critical areas such as:

  • Customer focus
  • Leadership
  • Change management
  • Planning
  • Managing for value
  • Delegation
  • Time management
  • Self management
  • Team building
  • Decision making
  • Communication skills
  • Presentation skills
  • Influencing skills

Where relevant, you'll have the chance to study for professional qualifications. Of course, your training and development will extend well beyond the graduate management development programme and support you throughout your career at Centrica.

Case Studies

The best possible advert for the success of the scheme lies in the successes of the graduates themselves. Recent examples include:

  • Ross Carmichael and Mary Maguire, 2 Information Systems Management graduates who both received IS Excellence awards. These were awarded in order to recognise the contribution that they have made over the past year, in line with the Centrica values of Challenge, Support, Pride, Trust and Passion for Customers.
  • Keith Parsons, who has received a HR Recognition Award for the contribution he has made to the Corporate Centre HR team. Keith was up against over 40 nominations for individuals and teams who had excelled in their roles.

Julia Tyson, Corporate Centre HR Director said:
What Keith has achieved in the role is well beyond what was expected of him at this stage of his career and is a credit to Centrica's graduate scheme.

  • Tamara Singh has been awarded The Independent Graduate of the Year Award. The judges felt that the submission was outstanding and made a powerful impression in what was a very strong field.
