Corporate Management Trainee Scheme
Law graduate, Michael Markwell, has been Musical Insurance Manager at Schemes since May last year. He was attracted by the flexibility of the Corporate Management Trainee Scheme and its size compared with the larger law firms/consultancy firms taking on 35-40 graduates each year.
“The CMT scheme appeared to offer a more personal support framework than many firms, and more of an opportunity to control the direction of your career,” says Michael.
Since joining the scheme in 2001 Michael has held various posts in Guildford, London and Tunbridge Wells – five moves in three years. “I haven't had to travel too far,” he says, “and moving becomes easier as you get to know more faces around the company and build a support network of colleagues, mentors, line managers etc. There’s a lot of support from HR and the managers involved in the scheme in the early stages, which is really important.”
Now, in his first management role, his key responsibilities are for sales, marketing and underwriting, setting vision and strategy, leading /managing a team of ten people, controlling the budget, and hitting new business targets without eroding profit margins.
“I've learnt an amazing amount and will continue to learn for at least another 18-24 months in this role,” he says. “My general ambition is simply to use each role to improve my own skills and experience whilst contributing positively to the business. Provided you hit or exceed your targets and you're prepared to be flexible about career direction, opportunities will always come up.”
Michael is keen to praise the support he’s had while on the scheme. “It’s been fantastic,” he says. “I've made some great friends and have had some great nights out over the last few years!”
