After graduating, Carlene spent six months working as temp while she hunted for a graduate career. Frustrated by the lack of opportunities and support she got from other agencies she turned to 1st Place.
“I was looking for a role where I could use my communication skills to interact with new people, where I could use my degree and still earn a good salary.” After responding to an online advertisement Carlene applied to 1st Place. “1st Place really impressed me from my first contact with them; I applied online and heard back from them almost straight away that I had been short listed for a telephone interview. They arranged a time to suit me and we had a relaxed chat about the sort of career that I would like. They suggested that sales could suit me and invited me to an assessment day.”
After passing the 1st Place assessment Carlene secured a junior field sales role with a leading electronic security firm and thanks to the training and coaching she received from 1st Place, Carlene is now one of the highest performing salespeople in the team.
Account Manager – IT Security

An English Literature Graduate from Nottingham Trent, Jason was looking for a career which would allow him to earn enough money to pay off his student loans and to maintain a keen interest in sailing. Jason passed our assessment centre and was offered an Account Management role with an IT security reseller in Reading. Jason started his role as an internal sales person but within six months he had been promoted to a field sales role.
“I always thought that I could make a good salesperson but I wouldn’t really have considered a role with an SME. I’m glad that I did though, as I have had the chance to get involved in many aspects of the business and have been given loads of autonomy; it really feels like I’m running my own business.”
In just over a year with the company Jason has doubled his basic salary and is one of the company’s top sales people.
“The training that I got from 1st Place really helped to change my perception of sales; I used to think it was about telling people the features of your service, but it’s really about understanding a customer’s issues and working with them to find a solution.”
Business Development Executive – Advertising and Media

This dynamic young lady really impressed us with her drive and enthusiasm when she attended our assessment centre. Hayley was offered roles by the first three companies to interview her but she was holding out for company where she could really feel at home. After listening to her career aspirations 1st Place helped Hayley to secure a role with a large media sales company.
“I had always wanted to get onto a graduate development program but after meeting with some smaller companies I thought they lacked the career structure that would help me to reach my goals. I liked the way 1st Place listened to my needs, helped me find the right company and didn’t force me to take the first role I was offered.”
Hayley began a graduate program in London and supported by 1st Place’s coaching program she was a huge success. After completing her training program Hayley was selected for a fast-track management program and after a year, switched careers into a creative advertising role.
