I applied to Hayward Tyler as it is a market leader in fluid filled motors and because the graduate scheme would enable me to quickly contribute to the company’s growth.

Due to the urgency and importance of certain projects, I was assigned to support the senior electrical engineers in designing a data acquisition system, developing a motor design software tool and was involved in a tidal stream renewable energy project. The project looked at using Hayward Tyler wet wound technology for developing an underwater generator. I worked on this project with other graduates in the business and completed a white paper and a working prototype. We were able to consider alternative technologies such as permanent magnet motors, a technology we have not yet exploited.

Tyrihans is our flagship product and is the most advanced 2.5MW submersible motor in the world. I have developed the test rigs for the project and developed a number of electrical data collection devices to monitor the test rig performance.

My key responsibilities are to:

  • Review electrical design requirements to ensure compliance with customer specifications.
  • Provide support on electrical design issues and adopt a multi disciplined team approach to product design.
  • Maintain electrical documentation and the consistency of electrical design output.
  • Develop activities such as data acquisition systems as part of the test and R&D function.
  • Use electrical software simulation tools, and computer aided design software.

My role requires me to solve technically challenging problems. Immediately my knowledge from what I had learned during university was put into practice. Over time I learned that developing some analytical tools to assist in problem solving could help save time.

At Hayward Tyler I have the opportunity to learn new areas of engineering such as hydraulics and rotordynamics and have found that self satisfaction comes from successfully solved problems. The great thing about working for Hayward Tyler is the supportive management team and friendly colleagues which create a good working environment. I feel that I have been able to develop myself through various in house training and working on very interesting projects.
