Ian Hills - Graduate Finance Trainee

Company Name: ABP (Anglo Beef Processors)

Location: Doncaster

University: Leeds

Degree: BA Economics & Politics

Year of graduation: 2003

When did you start with ABP? 2004

Where are you based?
Initially I was at our Birmingham head office. After six months of training in the group head office I moved up to our Doncaster facility to formally begin my traineeship.

Why did you apply to ABP?
Having decided that I wanted to pursue the CIMA qualification I was looking for a training scheme with a firm in the manufacturing sector, the thought of ticking boxes as an auditor held no appeal whatsoever! ABP in particular appealed to me because of their unending commitment to training and development in all levels of the business. ABP offered an exciting career opportunity at the market leader during a period of rapid expansion. With ABP’s support I was able to complete my CIMA exams in just less than two years, first time.

How has your job role changed?
Over the last two and a half years I’ve been able, not only to take on more responsibility, but also to head up projects from costing models to budgets. I’ve certainly found that at ABP management are always keen to challenge my horizons and comfort zone – I believe this constant improvement mentality gives me an advantage over other CIMA graduates in today’s market.

What are you doing now?
I currently manage the ledger team, whilst maintaining my daily involvement in both the management and financial accounting functions. I am currently in the midst of my second financial year end with ABP and comparisons with my first year end only highlight how far my team and I have come.

What are your professional plans for the next 12-18 months within ABP?
I plan on acquiring my full membership of the CIMA institute in September this year and continuing to build on the foundations I’ve laid here at ABP. With over a dozen sites operating in the UK, I know that opportunities for career progression will never be hard to come by and I look forward working with ABP for many years to come.

What do you like most about ABP as an employer?
Their commitment. ABP has been 100% behind my training and development not only with my CIMA qualification but also in the development of my career and work exposure. In doing so, ABP has been incredibly flexible with my working commitments and opportunities over the last two and a half years. I firmly believe I am a better accountant now thanks to ABP than I would be with any other employer.
