Gap Years and Travel

Gap Years

Around 20,000 students opted to take a gap year after graduation last year and this is a growing trend. More and more graduates are not ready to go straight into the world of work after university and want to take advantage of the opportunity to travel whilst they are young and have no ties.

Whilst the idea of jet setting off into the sunset is very appealing it can also be very expensive and for many graduate with student loans to pay off it is not first on their list of priorities. However, this is the one time in your life when for many of you, it will be the most appropriate time to get some real life experience and have some amazing adventures.

Although this is a personal experience, it helps to plan ahead and consider what you will do when you return after your gap year. A properly planned gap year can actually be a valuable asset on your CV. Make sure you do not waste this opportunity as it will not only be expensive financially, but could damage your employability.

Most employers are looking for evidence of well-spent time out and they may be unwilling to take a chance on you if they can’t see that you have spent your time wisely.

There’s a lot you can gain from a gap year but like anything in life, proper research and planning now can save you from awkward questions and regrets later.
