Case Studies

Oliver Evans

University of Sheffield – Graduated 2007

BEng Mechanical Engineering

MSc Computational Biomechanics

I am currently working in the mining sales department. My role involves supporting the sales manager for the territories of Uganda, Kenya, Sierra Leone. This role involves researching new mining opportunities in the territories and then following up by quoting and producing machine specifications for individual customers. The role is a challenging one with face to face contact with customers.

From the start of my employment with Unatrac I spent the initial 4 months in the parts department understanding the ordering systems, methods and environmental difficulties whilst running through basic training and machine familiarisation. At the end of my first 4 month placement I undertook my first visit to Africa to conduct a customer survey of parts supply/ usage in Ghana.

After 4 months I joined the mining dept to increase my understanding of the business operations as a whole.  I have since spent the last several months in Tasmania, Australia on secondment with Caterpillar learning about their underground mining machines.  Since my return my role has been more sales focussed with more of an active role in the quote /sales process with customers.

The role has allowed me to travel to Spain, Belgium, Ghana and Australia. Personal development is important and I am scheduled to participate in courses in Spain and Germany in the coming year as well as visiting my current territories.

I like the fact that although a multi-national company with multi-national business opportunities, Unatrac also has a smaller company feel and are fairly flexible as an employer. I like the fact that Unatrac are quick to get employees such as myself involved within the business and also on site to the territories in which we operate.

I really enjoy that the type of work gives me the opportunity to see so many different parts of the world and is not solely office based.  I enjoy the responsibility I have been given in the role and being able to work in an exciting job sector, such as the mining industry. This role has allowed me to combine my engineering background in a more commercial setting.

What we offer

Starting salary is £23,000. Fully expensed international travel.
