Office For National Statistics

Overview

Impartial information is vital to an open and democratic society. As part of the Office for National Statistics, you could enjoy a fulfilling professional career, making statistics available to the nation.

Who are we?

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is a government department and the principal provider of official statistics about the UK. Our statistics inform the development of social and economic policy, and make headlines on a daily basis.

Career Opportunities

We’re currently recruiting Researchers, Statisticians, Statistical and Survey Methodologists, and Demographers.

Training and Development

As ONS is recognised as an Investor in People organisation, we make significant investment in training and development. We are committed to the continuing professional development of all our staff. At our discretion, we can provide financial support to staff to pursue further education, e.g. MSc, PhD and external training courses. This may be through evening classes, National Vocational Qualifications, distance learning material or Open University courses. We also promote wider learning and development, such as policymaking, management, communication, project management, strategy and finance.

As a graduate you can look forward to gaining experience in the latest and best statistical methods. There will also be excellent opportunities to develop your team working, communication and project management skills. Further opportunities will be available to develop and enhance your potential for promotion. These may include:

·         Attendance at international conferences

·         Regular in-house seminars

·         In-house study groups

·         National Accounts training

·         Contact and projects with academics working with ONS microdata

What we look for

We ask for a 2:2 degree in a numerate degree discipline such as Mathematics or Statistics. We’ll also consider any degree with a substantial statistical content (at least 25%) such as Geography, or a social science degree with significant research methods, social policy or statistics components.

A postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject area or in research methods would be an advantage. Alternatively, you may have another relevant social research, statistical or economics qualification at the appropriate level.
